Celebrating Belonging with National Share A Story Month 2022 Every year the Federation of Children’s Book Groups (FCBG) celebrates National Share a Story Month – an annual month-long event promoting the power of sharing stories and the art of storytelling. The event organises a range of fun activities in partnership with libraries, schools and publishers, encouraging children across the UK to love reading. Each year has a different theme and this year is ‘Belonging’. The focus is to enable every child to feel respected and accepted for who they are, with a sense of being a part of something – be that through friends, clubs, or seeing themselves reflected in the books they read and the characters within them. There are several competitions for children to get involved in which are: There are several competitions for children to get involved in which are: Class or Library Display Competition Aimed at school children, students are invited to create an engaging and inclusive display about the theme of Belonging. Photos can be shared by email and prizes will be awarded. I Belong Competition There are three different age groups who can enter this competition. Children can share all the different ways in which they feel they belong. This could be through their friendships, family, groups or clubs they attend, or culture. Entries can be sent via post or by emailing photos. Prizes will be awarded for each of the age categories (5-7, 8-10, 11+). Belonging Book Recommendations Children can share a book that they’ve read which they connected with, related to the character, or in which they felt like they were part of the story. It could be a book with a similar setting or situation, or relatable characters that made them feel part of the action. Children are asked to share their Belonging Book via photos or drawings which will then be made into a PDF. Photo permissions are required.
