Lowest Ever Levels of Writing EnjoymentKids Creative Writing SheetsLatest research reveals a troubling decline in children's enjoyment of writing. Last year, we recorded the lowest ever levels of writing enjoyment since our records began. This year the picture is even worse. Less than a third of children and young people enjoy writing in their free time, and only 1 in 9 are writing daily. High numbers are leaving primary and secondary school without the literacy skills they need to thrive and children’s futures are being put at risk. Jonathan Douglas, CEO says: “It is now time to provide children and young people with more meaningful opportunities, both in and out of school, to reconnect with the creative elements of writing which transform it into an enjoyable activity that allows for self-expression and that works as a tool to process struggles, make sense of the world and participate actively in civic life.” National Literacy Trust is calling on the incoming government to ensure that creative and expressive writing are embedded in the Department for Education’s forthcoming writing framework in order to help more children discover a love of writing which can ultimately transform their lives.
