Green Bean Studios joins 900+ signatures in an Open letter to the Prime Minister on children’s reading. Evidence shows that we face a growing crisis in reading for pleasure, which has been declining since the pandemic across all socio-economic groups and is particularly pronounced in children from low-income families. There is consistent and longstanding evidence of the benefits of reading for pleasure on outcomes for children and its impact on their wellbeing, empathy skills and behaviour in schools. Despite the steady decline in children reading for pleasure in recent years, this research highlights the importance of encouraging children to read from a variety of sources to inspire a love of reading – not just traditional storybooks. The research showed that “children and young people who read comics were more engaged with reading, regardless of their age”. It also indicated that nearly twice as many children and young people who read comics in their free time said they enjoyed reading compared with those who didn’t read comics in their free time. We are committed to getting children to love reading from an early age. All elements of our business support this by making reading fun and engaging for children whilst encouraging parents and caregivers to spend more time reading with their children. Following the pandemic, reports showed an increase in the number of children struggling with speech and language delays. We successfully helped a boy aged 2.5 years old to overcome a diagnosed speech delay , going on a reading journey with our books called the Green Bean Collection which completely transformed his communication skills. View Yether’s story on Youtube: The Green Bean Collection supports children with SEN by providing a multi-sensory approach to learning – our toys are designed to work alongside our books to give children with additional needs more ways to learn and engage with reading.
